Last week, superstar Dita Von Teese launched her Wonderbra special glamour collection. There was some scuttlebutt that her supposedly scandalous past was going to somehow mess up the deal. Personally, given that Dita Von Teese first became famous for her unique sexiness, I think the rumors that she might lose the Wonderbra campaign over it were either astroturf or more likely haters. Yes, that’s right, a beautiful woman who creates and really embodies her own individual style can go as naked and as naughty and as fetish as she likes and still have the world revolve around her. Dita Von Teese is simply a combination of someone who was special to begin with and also was willing to plan and work really really hard. Kudos to her. The video above has some info on the Sexy Science by Dita launch and the video below has the smashingly hot and fun commercial for the lingerie line. I haven’t tried any of it on yet, but . . .

Baby Sinead has some very helpful advice for those who might seek to pronounce the word bass. Especially if one is, for example, presenting on stage. Watch the video and find out how to do it right.
Just so ya know, if you pronounce is /beɪs/ or [beys], so it rhymes with ace, lace, debase, then it has to do with sounds which are low in range. If your pronunciation is more like /bæs/ or [bas], so it rhymes with ass, class, fail to pass, then it pertains to fish.
When I was little, my family went deep sea bass-fishing a couple of times. I was good at fishing, but the whole hooking living things aspect kinda bothered me. Bass can be a freshwater or ocean fish, although I do not know whether that makes much difference in flavor. It might be reasonable to assume it does. Fresh . . .

Back when I worked in other people’s offices, I used to refer to myself as technologically bisexual. I was equally comfortable on a MAC or a PC. I mean, most of my work was in Photoshop, PowerPoint, and PageMaker, with the occasional call for MicroSoft Word, Quark, or Illustrator. Once in the blue moon, I’d need to use some more esoteric software, but it was generally something available on both MAC and PC. And once I was inside the software, it was fundamentally the same thing on either platform. I could handle the amazingly wrenching switch from dealing with a doohickey key to a control key.
When I bought my own machinery, over the years, Blue Blood has been almost entirely PC. There has been the occasional person who already had a MAC that I bought MAC stuff for, such as a MAC cam or something like that, but, for the most part, Blue Blood has been entirely a PC-based company. I was not prejudiced against MACs. Certainly not at the beginning. I thought the machines were fundamentally the same, except a MAC had a nicer case, and a PC was more bang for the buck. This is not to say that a PC was in any way a technologically better machine. It wasn’t. It just cost a little more money to get the same thing in MAC format. Plus I could buy PC parts and really save by building my own power workstations.
But then Apple came out with their series of Think Different advertisements which made my teeth itch. First they bought all that footage of really cool dead people, like Apple had a fucking endorsement from Einstein or something. Then Apple pitched a fit when The Church of Satan web site, made by actual living person Peter Gilmore . . .

Talk Like a Pirate Day

Yesterday, September 18th, I posted a Blue Blood countdown of the Top Ten Pirate Movies of All Time. I thought it was a fun round-up of flicks folks could watch to get psyched up for International Talk Like a Pirate Day today, September 19th. Some people got very worked up about the list and one person even tried to claim that the holiday’s roots come from the works of Bobby Henderson, founder of The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. If you want to know some accurate history about Talk Like a Pirate Day, you can check out the Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day article I wrote for the holiday in 2007. The additional movie suggestions were legion, so I am, however, going to present a few more flicks my pals from the Blue Blood boards, LJ, and elsewhere suggested. Just in case you don’t have enough pirate movies to watch today yet.
Sinbad — Blue Blood boards member Skully pointed out that I had not mentioned Sinbad and reminded me of how awesome the claymation in that was when it came out. I actually thought that movie was totally kickass when I was a kid, but I can’t seem to find the version I saw on IMDB. In fact, I can’t find any claymation Sinbad movie on there at all. I sort of thought the title had to do with the Seven Seas and there are entries with that title, but none which appear to have the sort of special effects that I recall. Please note that I am not hallucinating claymation pirates because Skully remembers the same movie.

Top Ten Pirate Movies of All Time

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End — I’m going to count the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy which came out in 2003, 2006, and 2007 as all one entry in the pantheon of greatest pirate flicks of all time. I think most modern pirate enthusiasts like them some swaggering Johnny Depp. Costumer Penny Rose was nominated for numerous awards and won a Saturn Award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, so I think it is fair to say that Pirates of the Caribbean is the biggest influence on current scurvy costuming for events such as tomorrow’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
2. Pirates of Penzance — Next up is the Pirates of Penzance, although it is hard to pick which version. Leap Day plays an important part in this story and Leap Day has been important in my personal life. Plus I think I first learned about pirates when I saw a live production of the Gilbert & Sullivan production in Manhattan. I consulted with my father on which movie version is best because, at summer camp as a kid, he played the part of the boy whose half-deaf nursemaid accidentally apprentices him to a pirate when she is supposed to send him off to learn the pilot trade. Pirate, pilot, anyone could make that mistake. Gilbert & Sullivan operettas are of course intended to be funny, but the D’Oyly Carte G&S company played the roles straight and just allowed the humor of the situation come through. There was also a more recent version featuring Kevin Kline, Linda Rondstadt . . .
