Cocaine for cats? Vocabulary word of the day?

Eucaine is now, due to Scrabble, my word of the day. I did not play the word. Apparently eucaine is a kitty cocaine and I would have known this already if I were a veterinarian. I am not a veterinarian.

Eucaine is now my word of the day. What is your word of the day?

Blue Blood Media Sponsor at Release the Bats Nine Year Anniversary
by Amelia G : October 22nd, 2007

Dave Bats and Jenn BatsAs Blue Blood comes up on our fifteen year anniversary — wait a second, wtf? Did I just say fifteen year anniversary? It feels like it was only yesterday that I was sitting on the floor of my punk rock group house, folding issues of Black Leather Times with my unsavory pals, and talking about how I was thinking about trying something glossier and maybe more erotically-oriented.

Doing Blue Blood in print plunged me headlong into a world which included so much which fascinated and intrigued me. One of my favorite things was trading publications with like-minded zinesters all over the world, showing them what I made and getting to see what they created. I think it was trading zines with the late great Ghastly magazine which eventually led me to meet up with the multi-talented deathrock crew from Release the Bats.

Some of how the world has turned out is certainly not what I envisioned when I took the road less traveled, but I guess fifteen years and going strong means I chose okay. I hope. A funny thing about being a lean independent but workaholic organization like Blue Blood is that we always have a ridiculous number of projects going on at once and sometimes some projects happen bizarrely fast, while others get completed on a timeline that only seems natural to vampires.

Speaking of the undead, I have really enjoyed the photographic work Forrest Black and I have created shooting at nightclubs over the years. In current internet business terms, I guess Blue Blood is technically the media sponsor for the upcoming Nine Year Anniversary of Release the Bats. But really the Blue Blood crew is just going to be kicking it old skool

Dallas Does Not Want to Do Debbie Any More
by Amelia G : October 19th, 2007

With Apologies to ICanHasCheezBurgerThere are a few porn movies which most people have heard the names of — Behind the Green Door, The Devil in Miss Jones, and Debbie Does Dallas. Add Cafe Flesh and maybe Caligula to the list if you are a science fiction dork fan like me. You can enjoy smut without ever having seen any of those flicks. You can make smut without ever having seen any of those flicks. But, if you have not heard of them, then you are missing a piece of the cultural zeitgeist that most people are in on.

Adult industry professionals and critics have a number of theories as to why the original Debbie Does Dallas movie was so popular. Some people think it was because a lot of people are hot for cheerleader porn and the Dallas Cowboys (and their cheerleaders) were practically America’s team at the time. I’m not really a football person, so I can’t comment on the veracity of that claim. Some people think Debbie Does Dallas was just a really catchy punchy title that was fun to say. Kind of like Snakes on a Plane, but with, you know, naked people. Some people believe that Debbie Does Dallas rode the initial wave of Betamax production, being one of the very first adult titles available on that videocassette format. Yes, I said Betamax. For those of you who are like “WTF is Betamax?”: It was a videotape format which competed with VHS to be the industry standard when VCR’s or video cassette recorders first came out. Betamax was generally considered to be a higher quality format, but VHS embraced the porno market. Guess which one ended up more popular? A VCR was expensive when Debbie Does Dallas first came out, so being one of the only options for an underserved and overpaid market was probably an advantage. Some experts on adult video opine that Debbie was just really really really incredibly hot. Whatever the reason, Debbie Does Dallas was one of the best-selling skin flicks of all time.

So what happens when a director or producer has the hook-up to make a movie with a decent budget, but they don’t actually have anything much to say personally as an artist? That’s right, they

Speaking of Rachel Kramer Bussel, some of you who get various newsletters already know this, but Rachel did a really kickass interview with yours truly for the October 2007 issue of Penthouse Variations. It was a really good interview because Rachel asked really thought-provoking questions.

Oddly enough, you can order a subscription to Variations through Amazon, but you need to hit the newsstand in the next couple of days to get the October 2007 issue with the BlueBlood.com photos and Rachel’s and my brilliant words. Due to

30 Days of Night Vampires are Scary Predators

30 Days of Night

What comes to mind when someone says “Vampire”?

30 Days of NightThroughout the world there have been all sorts of undead that feed off the blood of the living. Most vampires are not some romantic version of the undead a la Brad Pitt, Frank Langella, Bela Lugosi or even Kate Beckinsale. Vampires have become docile and over-eroticized in the past twenty years with books from Anne Rice and Laurell K. Hamilton. Don’t get me wrong I love the humanization of the vampire and the sexual vampire has something because I think every single person deep down inside of them wishes they could give themselves to a lover forever. (Who could ever forget the 80’s The Hunger.) But in the last twenty years vampire movies, books and storylines have not grabbed me by the throat. (I know bad joke.) Classics like 1922’s Nosferatu where something that was not human was on the screen. Truly undead. Is there any hope for Hollywood’s version of the bloodsucking undead? I think there is and that hope comes in the form of a story that started as a comic book that came out in 2002 from IDW and the minds of Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith called 30 Days of Night.

Wish to know what it is to see vampires at their rawest form of true predator of the food chain? Then I suggest you pick up a copy of Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith’s 30 Days of Night. This award-nominated comic book/graphic novel not only captured the intensity of the undead as something not to be admired, but feared for what they are – killers of humans. Steve Niles

Goth Pepper Pink Sock

Amelia G and Tim SinnSo Scar 13 and I wanted to blow off a little steam in a chill environment after work. We listened to Loveline as we rolled over to Boardner’s in my Town Car. We were not actually going to Boardner’s, but Scar had checked her camera at Bar Sinister the preceeding Saturday and tipsily forgotten it there, so she needed to pick it up. Fortunately, they were able to find it. Yay! She keeps her camera in this little pink sort of chamois slipcover. She mentioned to me that Bradical, who has been kind enough to loan us his house and his lemons (don’t ask), for photo shoots, calls it a pink sock. Pink sock is one of those awful phrases, like Dirty Sanchez, which you must learn the meaning of if you are going to successfully use the internet in the future. Apparently Bradical had run into Dr. Drew, of Loveline fame, backstage at some KROQ event and had decided to ask him impertinent questions about how Scar should run her sex life. He then dutifully reported Dr. Drew’s answers back to Scar, along with the definition of a pink sock.

So we listen to more Loveline on the way over to the gothic club night which is our destination. The guest is advising the best way for a woman to orgasm during heterosexual intercourse is to only insert the guy’s dick about a third of the way in and rub her clitoris. A third of the way in? How enormous is the penis we are talking about here? Anyway, I’m pretty sure the answer is a bit more varied than that and I think I could have helped the caller out way better. Loveline’s guest was embarrassed to

Halcyon Pink on CNN

Halcyon Pink on CNN
by Amelia G : October 12th, 2007

You all will be pleased to see that Blue Blood hottie and Community member Halcyon Pink’s HugNation project is getting great props as he tours the country. The basic concept is that every Tuesday at 1pm Pacific time, you should hug who you are with or hug yourself. This could get dicey depending on where you work, but the idea is to get in touch with being a part of humanity and commonality with one’s fellow man. Halcyon says, “Think of it as a sort of prayer — a communal expression of compassion. It is a weekly reminder that we are connected and we all far more similar than we are different. Everyone can use a hug.” Halcyon picked up an old RV and painted it pink and put pink fun fur in it and generally made it cool enough that his neighbors complained about it. He is just finishing up a six city Hug Nation tour in the pink RV. There has been a bunch of local press as he has gone through Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Sacramento, culminating with the CNN report posted here. This weekend . . .

Funkatron Wins Adobe AIR Developer Derby for Best HTML Community Application

Funkatron Wins Adobe AIR Developer Derby for Best HTML Community Application

Adobe AIR Spaz

Adobe pretty much owns the digital photo processing market and they are out to conquer the market for applications to code for the web. Adobe started along this path when they acquired MacroMedia, but they are continually upping the ante. Adobe Integrated Runtime or AIR was designed to facilitate putting cool internet stuff on your desktop. The system makes it easier for developers to utilize HTML, CSS, Ajax, Flash, and PDF technology and more to essentially extend Web 2.0 to your desktop, without the end user having to learn a whole lot of new skills. Adobe’s concept is that they are helping to extend rich internet applications or RIA’s to the desktop. Why we need the RIA acronym instead of just calling the subject at hand “rich internet applications” is anybody’s guess. My theory is that something about the web causes humans to want to acronymize things . . .
