Elisha Cuthbert CaptivityIt’s kind of funny that I love love love the aesthetic of the new Captivity movie, yet I’m kinda not cool with the subject matter. I’m not too comfortable with it being censored either, though.

I know people have been complaining, since before I was born, about violence in movies being okay, while sexuality is censored. But I have to say, why is it that if someone puts their cock in a beautiful woman’s mouth, the movie is probably going to get an X and thus limited distro and thus limited financing and production values? But dismember the same woman slowly and the discussion becomes R or NC-17? Is it really okay to broadcast horrors, the likes of which most people will never ever see in person, to seventeen-year-olds, but healthy sexuality, of a sort most people will experience, takes another year of maturing for audiences to be able to handle it? What kind of a society are we going to have when we show teenagers torture porn like Hostel before we let them see, if you can forgive me for invoking normalcy, normal sex?

Full disclosure: Obviously, you all can’t have missed the advertisements Captivity bought on a number sites I work on, including this one. And, yes, if you went to the premiere party at Los Angeles meat market Privilege, you probably spotted around half a dozen hotties you recognized from BlueBlood.com, along with various other contributors.

It bums me out, on a number of levels, that the premiere party was billed as ground-breakingly outrageous and nasty. This seems to show a simultaneous lack of respect for the performers and desire to profit from them. Although the cigarette smoke-stained off-white interior of Privilege generally plays host to . . .

As Dita Von Teese is the face of the ad campaign IFC is currently running in heavy rotation for their Indie Sex mini-series, it seems timely to post this Blue Blood update ForrestBlack and I shot of her with some of her signature finery and accessories. Although, I tend to cringe at most uses of the word “indie”, I feel the mainstream film industry knows what it means by the term, so I am a-ok with it. IFC’s mini-series is set to air at the witching hour on August 1, 2, 3, and 4. The channel will be showing studies of the push/pull of extremes and taboos and censorship. There are now precisely 600 photographs of the lovely Dita on BlueBlood.com and, as these photos show, she’s still got it!

Socket Hits the Film Festival Circuit

Socket Hits the Film Festival Circuit

Socket by Sean Abley

Writer/director/producer Sean Abley’s dark science fiction flick Socket is hitting the film festival circuit now. The world premiere was at the Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Fest. It is screening tonight at the Outfest 07 Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

Although Socket will probably eventually appear under the Gay & Lesbian heading in my Netflix account, it is a straight up genre flick and the genre is psychological horror/dark SF. The basic storyline is surgeon gets hit by lightening. Cute intern in the hospital he is treated at hooks him up with a support group for people who develop cravings for electricity, after events like being struck by lightening. They start a romantic relationship and, of course, it being a spooky movie, everything goes horribly awry.

The surgeon’s cravings for electricity require a more and more powerful jolt for him to get his fix. He figures out how to implant sockets in his and his lover’s wrists. This leads to both a nifty vampire subtext and entertainingly blatant metaphors for things like meth and cocaine-fueled bathroom sex, which are the sorts of topics most amusingly approached in metaphor. The movie is partly a meditation on the nature of addiction, albeit perhaps a tongue-in-cheek meditation.

The best part of the film is indubitably Sean Abley’s masterful ear for simultaneously believable and humorous dialogue. The characters banter with one another in a lighthearted way which puts a smile on the viewer’s face and feels tremendously real, like they are actual sympathetic people you could know in real life. It is pretty rare that I see a movie where the characters are at all recognizable from my own experience, so I really . . .

Comic Con 37 Friday

Comic Con 37 Friday

Robyn and Andrew Boyd at ComicCon in the BlueBlood Booth

The Friday of the 2006 Comic Con, I only busted out my camera when really motivated because we’d gone on the Superhero and Supervillian-themed party bus the night before and, after a couple of days in the oppressive San Diego heat, I was slowing down. Still managed to shoot a nice little photo gallery for your viewing pleasure.

I was super-excited to get to see the very entertaining horror screenwriter and producer Sean Abley. Oddly enough, although he and I live literally across the street from one another, I met my neighbor online first and neither of us remembers precisely how. At any rate, he is a great wit and his Dark Blue Productions darkly humorous science fiction feature Socket is showing at the Los Angeles Outfest this Friday, so I highly recommend Angelenos stop by and check it out. (More on this later.)

Those of you who have been with us and Blue Blood since before the beginning will of course remember Black Leather Times, my punk humor zine, more affectionately (or hostilely) known as BLT. Drew “Vladimir Drakovich, King of Mars” Boyd wrote and, with Max Glick, co-wrote a number of humorous articles for BLT back in the crew’s DC days. I had the pleasure of running into Andrew Boyd in our booth at Comic Con and he hooked me and Forrest Black up with some kindly personalized Scurvy Dogs. Andrew Boyd’s publisher AiT/Planet Lar classifies Scurvy Dogs as a cult classic on their web site. This tale of pirates gone astray, co-written with Ryan Yount, absolutely deserves the status.

Sometimes I find conventions difficult because my . . .

ComicCon in the BlueBlood Booth

As this year’s Comic Con looms near, it is time to take a look back at last year’s event. Looking at the gallery of snapshots from the Blue Blood crew’s Thursday at the show reminded me of some of the fun we had.

I was excited to pick up entertaining stuff from Shannon Wheeler of Too Much Coffee Man fame. I loved all the crazy Lego, including Lego Batman and Lego robots. Actually, all robots are cool, not just those made out of plastic bricks for kids. BlueBlood.com hottie Yolanda was in the house as well. The lovely blonde, Em, is almost my namesake and is a real mail order Russian bride. Special thanks to The Brotherhood for sponsoring the megabooth and making sure it came complete with a beautiful and personable mail order bride.

I was pleased to be able to literally buy a shirt off the back of the very kind Gwen from Sighco. Gwen and I are around the same size and she was wearing a shirt which read, “Guns don’t kill people. Supervillains kill people.” Everyone from our spooky ookie artistic folks megabooth was going on a Superhero and Supervillain-themed party bus that night. A bus complete with stripper pole, I might add. Oddly, the booth with the Simpsons costumes and various supergear was just displaying and was not renting or selling them at the convention. I kinda think they left some money on the table there. This meant I really did need that Supervillain shirt right away then and Sighco’s Gwen actually took her own shirt off, right on the Comic Con show floor, let me try

Batty says this bellydance costume was hand trimmed and beaded, and a one of a kind piece. Although she is a busy girl, so bellydancing is not something she has time for often, she says it is not only a great way to enjoy music and stay in shape, but the costuming is beautiful. Dana Dark was kind enough to let Forrest Black and yours truly set up a location studio in her living room to shoot this. I hope you all enjoy the results. With eight sets on BlueBlood.com, Batty was one of Blue Blood’s earliest web models.

I ache all over

Being sick in the summertime really sucks. Somehow, if it is really cold out, bundling up in a blankie and drinking cocoa and chicken soup doesn’t seem as awful. I took Benedryl and my eyeballs are still too swollen for their sockets and my face feels all painful to the touch and my throat is sore and bleah, bleah, bleah. I think I have PMS too. I feel wretched, wretched, wretched, and I have so much work to do and was hoping to go out a couple nights this week to hang with people I don’t get to see that often.

Miko, a nurse, a nurse, I need a naked nurse!

Actually, I do have a summer cold, but I’m not sure a naked nurse would really help. Then again, doesn’t a naked nurse always help at least a little bit . . .

Toastee Still Naked on the Interwebs

Toastee Still Naked on the Interwebs

Toastee from Flavor of Love

The incredibly mild fame conferred by being on a reality show opens a person up for so much unpleasantness and, as near as I can ascertain, being on the show itself is a bummer. I know I used to be pretty responsive when television shows wanted to cover Blue Blood. I turned down Jenny Jones and all the talk show scum who asked me to tell everyone I was, like, totally a vampire and gawth is like, oh my goth, my life. But, even when I didn’t have cable or a TV with reception, Forrest Black and I both appeared on MTV, HBO, and FOX multiple times. I don’t know if it helps sales, but, as a journalist myself, I am reluctant to refuse someone access. At least I used to be. Now I regularly turn down television show producers who tell me how much they want to give Blue Blood exposure or how they plan to present a “positive spin” on my community. I used to believe some of the promises television people made, especially when I wrote them into our appearance contracts. I used to feel like being asked to appear on a show as an expert was a compliment. In a time when people have fleeting brushes with fame for defecating on Flavor Flav’s floor . . . well, who wants to be famous?

In my article Flavor Flav Has Hot Tub Love on VH1 but Ladies Best Be Nice Girls (who like threesomes) last year, I covered Flava Flav’s apparently hypocritical casting aside of Toastee, one of his supposed suitor chicks. For those just tuning in now, another supposed contestant on the show ratted Toastee out for appearing in Barely Legal and . . .

Yahoo and Flickr

Does anyone on my friends list know any higher level mucky-mucks over at Yahoo or Flickr?

Thanks for any assistance any of y’all can give me.

There is perhaps nothing on earth more depressing and heartbreaking than slogging through a few thousand model submissions in the year 2007. Okay, children’s cancer ward is way more depressing and heartbreaking, but, for fuck’s sale, at least it is supposed to be awful. This photography stuff was supposed to be fun.

I’d like to introduce you all to Julie Simone! Forrest Black and I shot the first two images after the jump and Lori Mann shot the last one. The first one also appeared in Forrest’s and my Big in America column for Marquis. Whole series for both on BlueBlood.com of course.
